Sara Nelson

  1. Call me Ishmael.
  2. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
  3. As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.
  4. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
  5. Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.
  6. Mother died today.
  7. Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed.
  8. All this happened, more or less.
  9. Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins.
  10. You are about to begin reading Italo Calvino's new novel, If on a winter's night a traveler.

  1. Moby-Dick by Herman Melville
  2. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  3. The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
  4. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
  5. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
  6. The Stranger by Albert Camus
  7. Ulysses by James Joyce
  8. Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
  9. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
Lolita, light of my life, fire of myloins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta."
  10. If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino

Sara Nelson

Cannery Row in Monterey in California is
    a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream.
