打從多年前看了那部由 Ralph Fiennes 與 Julianne Moore 主演的改編電影之後，The End of the Affair 這個故事在我的印象中和「雨」就再也分不開。手邊這本 Vintage classics 平裝本的封面上，幾筆素描勾勒出一把傘的形象，或許這把傘就是當時觸動了記憶，進而促使我買下這本小說的原因吧？不過，那也是數年前的事情了。
始終沒去讀它，可能是因為害怕被故事裡的愛恨纏綿折騰得鬱鬱終日。直到那天，溫暖的春陽灑落一室，我才忽然有了讀這本書的勇氣。
沒想到翻開書後的一連數日都是霪雨霏霏。每晚睡前，窗前雨聲和書中雨聲相應和，交織成一詭異的搖籃曲，催人入夢卻又讓人睡不安枕。
電影裡，男人對女人說： "I’m jeaIous of this stocking…Because it does what I can’t…Kisses your whoIe Ieg."
小說裡，女人這樣形容男人： "His love is like a medieval chastity belt: only when he is there, with me, in me, does he feel safe."
愛與恨就像樹與藤 [1] ： "Hatred seems to operate the same glands as love: it even produces the same actions. If we had not been taught how to interpret the story of the Passion, would we have been able to say from their actions alone whether it was the jealous Judas or the cowardly Peter who loved Christ?"
情事已盡，但此恨綿綿無絕期。 [2]
又是一個溫暖的三月天。我翻過小說的最後一頁，闔上書，順手將它擺在窗邊，希望陽光能夠蒸發一些故事裡的淒冷和愁苦。
